Construction of a BWRX-300 Small Modular Reactor (SMR) at the Darlington new nuclear site. The project would be Canada's first commercial, grid-scale SMR. The project includes clearing and grading parts of the site to build roads, utilities and support buildings. TIMELINE: Project was announced in late 2021. GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy selected as Small Modular Reactor technology development partner. OPG has awarded a $32 million contract to E.S. Fox Limited for the first phase of site preparation and support infrastructure for the Darlington New Nuclear Project. In March 2022, constructor E.S. Fox was awarded the contract to deliver early site preparation work, which includes water supply, electrical power, information technology and road services. A submission has been made as of November 2022 by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) for a License to Construct a small modular reactor (SMR) at the Darlington site. Early site preparation began early October 2022 when OPG received necessary permits and regulatory approvals. Site preparation work - which consists of non-nuclear infrastructure activities. A public hearing is expected to take place in 2024 as part of the regulatory review process. As of January 2023, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has created an alliance with GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, SNC-Lavalin, and Aecon to construct North America's first Small Modular Reactor (SMR) at the Darlington New Nuclear Project site. Further regulatory approvals are required, through the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), before any construction work can begin. Offshore geotechnical study also underway to prepare for new SMR. The SMR could be complete as early as 2028.
