Saving Project...

Renovation of a museum in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Design plans call for the renovation of a 30,000-square-foot museum.

This project will fund repairs to the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) building envelope, to include select repairs to the exterior walls, roof, windows, doors, and clerestory windows. The project is intended to enhance the building envelope and extend the life of the facility in accordance with a facility condition assessment conducted by HBA Architecture and Interior Design which was completed in September 2021. Funds are needed to address areas where moisture intrusion is evident where the clerestory windows sills are located, to address the deterioration of vertical expansion joints and cracks along the vertical/horizontal mortar joints in the exterior masonry and to replace the majority of exterior doors and windows. This work will extend the life of the building and will enhance the ability to control the temperature and humidity levels within the building which is essential to the display and preservation of fine art. The new building will support Virginia MOCA’s strategic plan to transform the Museum into a regional educational resource and hub of creativity and innovation, serving as a cultural landmark for the region, a vibrant gathering place where people of all walks can experience contemporary art in deeper and more interdisciplinary ways. The building design brings Virginia MOCA’s signature engagement and education experience, ArtLab, to the front of the building and provides 20 percent more education and exhibition space. The design ensures the museum can function as one of the largest classrooms on the VWU campus—an immersive, multi-modal learning lab. While the Museum will sit on the VWU campus and be available to VWU students and faculty, Virginia MOCA will remain an independent entity with its own board and staff as well as full curatorial oversight Project is included City of Virginia Beach FY 2023-2028 CIP. As of June 10, 2024, an architect has been identified. Estimated to take about nine months of planning before the facility breaks ground. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change. The content management team will continue to pursue additional details as they become available.
