Site work, paving and renovation of a mixed-use development in Columbia, Missouri. Conceptual plans call for the renovation of a office development; for site work for a sidewalk / parking lot; and for paving for a sidewalk / parking lot.
Proposed airport projects include a new paved parking lot, a fourth boarding bridge, and a deicing pad. Funding for the airport projects will come from a mix of the city's transportation sales tax and Federal Aviation Administration reimbursements. As of April 7, 2026, this project is in conceptual design. Project is currently being reviewed for proposals with public hearings held by the Columbia City Council. Information regarding architect and general contractor selection is unknown. A firm timeline has not been established. * https://www.columbiatribune.com/story/news/local/2026/04/06/public-hearings-will-determine-columbia-regional-airport-improvements/89448616007/ Columbia looking at several multimillion dollar projects at airport Portrait of Charles DunlapCharles Dunlap Columbia Daily Tribune April 6, 2026, 8:59 a.m. CT The Columbia City Council will hold six public hearings regarding improvements at Columbia Regional Airport. The Columbia City Council has a stacked agenda for its Monday evening meeting, April 6, though a majority of it is related to Columbia Regional Airport. There are six public hearings on the agenda related to airport construction and other improvements. The new terminal building at the airport opened almost four years ago and in that time air traffic has increased due the addition of Allegiant Airlines and its flights, American Airlines adding more flights and United Airlines returning to the airport with its flights. More air traffic also means more vehicle traffic coming to the airport, so the first hearing on the agenda is about converting a gravel parking lot into a paved lot. The total project cost is $3.2 million to add hundreds of parking spaces. It would be funded through the transportation sales tax. More flights also mean the airport needs an additional means of getting passengers from the terminal onto planes through a boarding bridge. A hearing will determine if a fourth boarding bridge is added to the terminal at a cost of $1.8 million, but the city only would be responsible for 10% of that cost, plus $60,000 for the design cost through the transportation sales tax. The rest of the $1.8 million is paid by the Federal Aviation Administration as a reimbursement to the city. When winter weather hits, ice can build up on aircraft, requiring them to be deiced. A concrete pad is planned at the airport for this purpose and is intended to capture the excess deicing agent, glycol, so that it does not go into the stormwater system. The total project cost would be $4.7 million, with the FAA again picking up 90% of the bill. Failing asphalt on a section of the terminal loop road needs replacement, as well, this time with concrete. Another hearing will determine if this approximately $859,000 project moves forward, again at a 90/10 cost share between the FAA and the city's transportation sales tax. Airport Drive itself also needs improvements, including resurfacing and wayfinding signage. This $1.7 million project would be wholly funded through the city's transportation sales tax if approved. A proposal set for a hearing would fund construction of a production kitchen, so that the new terminal can have some restaurant space. Building out the kitchen, including its design, is slated to cost around $828,000. While the city is building the kitchen space, the concessionaire is expected to provide the necessary equipment. The terminal project account is the funding source. Work is expected in two phases, first updating the grab-n-go technology and then building the kitchen for hot food. Other business With the growth of data centers for many uses, including for large language models and generative artificial intelligence, the city is set to provide a definition for zoning purposes in the city's unified development code. Proposed amendments to the code will set the definition and its zoning regulations for designating data centers. Prior to the council's main meeting Monday evening, there will be a work session to discuss the McKinney Building feasibility study. The city bought this Jazz-era building in August 2023 for eventual conversion into an educational space on the city's Black and jazz history, among other uses. The city will present results of a feasibility study to the council during the Monday evening work session. ____________________________________________ Offices, rental car counter will be housed in building adjacent to new COU terminal By this time next year, offices for airport administration, the Transportation Security Administration and a rental car counter all will be housed in the same building at Columbia Regional Airport, says airport manager Mike Parks. The offices and car rental will go into a structure adjacent to the airport's new terminal, which is set to open next month. The structure will need renovation and parking lot improvements, which is the second phase of planned airport improvements after construction of the terminal is completed. "Right now we are going through the public improvement process," Parks said about the second phase of the airport project. "We will go out to bid for a design team here soon. We anticipate having that design team on board this fall." The project will go out for a construction bid after the design team completes its process, he added. Renovation and construction is expected to happen next year. Depending on design time frame, Parks expects construction to be completed by summer 2023. An interested parties meeting was held Wednesday for phase two of the terminal improvement project. Airport administration and car rental currently are housed in the airport's original terminal, while TSA offices are housed in an out-building nearby. Only one community member attended Wednesday's meeting, Parks said Thursday in a phone call with the Tribune. That person was enthusiastic about the project, he said, while also encouraging the airport to install solar panels on buildings. Parks is looking forward to the opening of the airport's new terminal. "It will be a great facility for all of mid-Missouri to use. It will also be a great face of the region as people fly in," Parks said. *Project information, including timeline and contacts, has been obtained through public sources.
