Background: The Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) located in Miami, Florida, is seeking to reconstruct one of its workspaces which is suffering from structural degradation. The Necropsy Lab space was constructed on an elevated floor which was exposed to the sea air and not properly ventilated. These conditions caused significant spalling and an unsafe condition preventing the use of the room. The objective is to correct the problem by removing the raised floor and replacing it with a monolithic slab on grade. Additionally, a new laboratory space is being created and needs a 5x10 slab poured next to an exterior structure and another 12x12 slab poured adjacent to the existing building exterior. Scope: Task 1: Demolition Furnish all necessary labor, materials/supplies, equipment, services, and supervision necessary to accomplish all tasks necessary to demolish the exterior stairs, interior stairs and floor. Remove all debris for concrete recycling and leave the floor area clean to the sand surface. Tasks: 1. Seal off work area from existing lab using a lite frame work and 6 mil plastic sheeting. 2. Remove existing cabinets and store in a designated space for safe keeping. 3. Remove Exterior and interior stairs. 4. Remove the existing floor. Existing floor is an estimated 6 inches thick and is 4 feet above the ground level. It is suspended on 4 "legs" that are concrete pilings. The floor does not appear to be significantly connected to the surrounding walls. (appears to have a gap from underneath) STATEMENT OF WORK Necropsy Cryogenics Lab Repair 5. Clean any remaining floor attachments to the surrounding walls. 6. Saw cut and remove 4 pilings to within 5 inches of the planned new finished floor. 7. Cap off two 10-inch abandoned water pipes to prevent leakage creating a void under the new floor. 8. Saw cut existing exterior door to allow installation of new hurricane rated commercial 5'0" inch double door unit. 9. Remove rusted rebar from the spalled area of the side walls as far as possible. 10. Clean up and haul off all debris. Additional Procedural and Safety Requirements: Care must be taken to protect the electrical feed cables which run diagonally through the grade level sand. Suggested method to place sheets of 3/4 inch plywood over the conduit prior to demolition. Provide protection for plumbing stubs to prevent damage. Care must be taken to avoid damaging existing electrical conduits mounted to walls. Coral Lab Slabs and Piping (Optional) Furnish all necessary labor, materials/supplies, equipment, services, and supervision necessary to accomplish all tasks necessary to install 2 on grade, monolithic slabs with enhanced edges. Excavate a trench between the slabs around the building and install 2 electrical conduits and 3 water pipes. Tasks: 1. Have construction locations inspected for the location of buried pipes and wires. 2. Remove all organic debris from the construction location including grass, tree roots and weeds. 3. Treat to prevent plant growth under the slabs. 4. Create a trench and install three (3) 1.5-inch schedule 40 PVC pipes and two (2) 1.5- inch PVC electrical Conduit. Stub pipes up 4 feet at the identified locations and refill trench. The length of the trench is approximately 155 feet plus 14 feet for stub-ups (7 feet each end). The trench is to be 27 inches deep from grade surface and 4 inches wide (minimum). The customer will identify the terminating position of the pipes and conduits prior to construction.
