Site work and paving for a mixed-use development in Chesapeake, Virginia. Conceptual plans call for site work for a playground / park / athletic field; sidewalk / parking lot; and for paving for a sidewalk / parking lot.
Chesapeake Parks, Recreation and Tourism is currently in the final stages with VDOT with regards to transferring ownership of a known historic Civil War Earthworks Fort located on a parcel along Jolliff Road. Once acquired, the parcel will need to be excavated to discover and evaluate artifacts from the earthworks in and around the fort. After excavation the project will go through the design process to determine best locations for trails, interpretive signage, directional signage, parking and other historic interpretive features. This project will provide an entrance and parking area for the Civil War Fort Park on Jolliff Road, approximately 400' south of David's Mill Drive. This project funds this work. This project is included in the city’s 2024-2028 Capital Improvement Plan. As of August 1, 2024, per owner, the City has had archaeological studies completed and is now in process of trying to get this site nominated on the National Historical Registry. Parking lot work and some interpreted signage is scheduled for late Fall 2024. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change. The content management team will continue to pursue additional details as they become available.
