The Heck family lost their daughter Dani to suicide after years of battling mental illness and now feel they are creating a space to save other people's lives. "My dream is somehow, some way, some day and somewhere, there will be a rehabilitation facility called Dani's Place," Dani's mother Donna Heck said. This rehabilitation center will be focused on aiding people who have been discharged from the hospital but are not quite yet ready for life on their own. "When she got out of the hospital at that time, we got no help," Dani's father Jeffrey Heck described. "The psychiatric ward where she was, obviously needed to be for three days and then they just said okay, we can take her home." Donna elaborated on how difficult it was from there, saying, "We would literally lay in front of our daughter's door praying that she wouldn't hurt herself, she wouldn't leave, we had to lock up medication, lock up knives." Once completed, Dani's Place will house roughly two dozen patients suffering from mental illness. "We hope that everybody can start to collaborate and make Dani's Place the catalyst for providing this community with a long overdue concept of a home life rehabilitation center." Rep. Marcy Kaptur was at the press conference and shared that $2 million will be granted by the government to make this project a reality. "There are very few communities that have a state medical hospital right in their midst, right, so many of the patients from surrounding areas are coming here to Toledo for treatment, so we have a special responsibility," Kaptur said. This is the second facility of its kind in Ohio, and the Heck family hopes to bring it to more cities very soon. "This is kind of a first, not a last," Jeffrey said.
