Site work for a mixed-use development in Durham, North Carolina. Completed plans call for site work for a fire / police facility.

The City of Durham entered into an agreement with Duke University to install fiber optic cables along the public streets for the benefit of the City and other interest of the North Carolina Triangle region. Use of the fiber network will allow the City to increase the City's broadband capabilities and allowing the City to provide cost-effective, centralized network services to City facilities as well as partner facilities such as the Durham Housing Authority. Duke University is currently constructing dark fiber to the City facilities underground including fiber for the backbone and the spurs. The purpose of this RFP is to select a vendor that will complete the design and build of the last mile fiber between the identified handhole in the public right-of-way to the identified location in the City's facility. As the fiber optic network is a significant investment of City resources, the Technology Solutions team wants to ensure the fiber is delivered in a consistent, repeatable format align to the City's best practices. Background: The City of Durham has approximately 2,500 full-time employees working in 25 Departments in 80 locations in the Durham, NC area. The largest Departments are Police, Fire, Water Management, Solid Waste, Public Works, Neighborhood Improvement Services, Parks & Recreation and General Services. The City currently relies on a Metropolitan Area Network provided by a telecommunication service provider (Spectrum) to provide network connectivity to the City's locations. The Metropolitan Area Network connects the City facilities to the City's primary data center, located at City Hall (101 City Hall Plaza) and the secondary data center, center located at the Police Department Headquarters (602 East Main Street). The data centers provide connectivity via Internet Service Providers to the cloud and provide access to core business applications. The expected output of the design and build process will include: Fiber test results Photos of completed outside plant and inside plant work Fiber terminated at the facility's network closet This scope of work summary is not intended to be exhaustive or prescriptive. We are relying on the experts to provide us a comprehensive proposal outlining best practices to connect the facilities to the City's fiber network. The City has made the following documents available for review as part of this RFP in Appendix B: Site plan provided by Kimley Horn Splicing plan provided by Duke University (where available). Splicing plans will be available before work is scheduled.
