GENERAL a) This specification describes the minimum material and quality requirements for precast concrete structural box culverts and appurtenances for use in the construction of highway improvements. The work in this section shall consist of providing precast box culverts sections which conform to the requirements of NYSDOT Section 604 and NYSDOT Section 706-17. b) Precast concrete units shall be the product of a recognized manufacturer experienced in the production of precast structural units of the type indicated and specified. c) Fabrication of all precast elements shall be according to thePCCM DESIGN PARAMETERS a) Design Specifications: Precast concrete box culvert designs shall meet the requirements of Highway Design Manual Section 19.5 "Design Guidelines for Reinforced Concrete Culverts". b) Live Load: HS 25/HL-93 c) Design cover: Assume 24-inches minimum depth of cover. d) Design details for bridge size culverts (greater than 20-ft span) shall include load rating information. i) Load Rating shall be determined in accordance with the current AASHTO "Manual for Bridge Evaluation," with all interim provisions in effect. ii) Load ratings shall also be computed by the Load and Resistance Factor Rating (LRFR) method. The contractor shall include all load rating computations in the design calculation submittal. iii) Design calculations shall be stamped by a Professional Engineer. e) Base bid assumes a skew of 0 to 15-degrees. f) As required, tops of box culverts shall have threaded steel inserts to allow connection of Cast- InPlace curb reinforcing to the box. MATERIALS a) Precast concrete box culvert units shall be in conformance with NYSDOT Section 706-17. b) Provide 2-inches minimum concrete cover over reinforcing steel on walls, floor slab and roof slabs. c) Corrosion inhibitor shall consist of a calcium nitrate solution containing 30% calcium nitrate solids by weight and weighing 10.6 pounds per gallon. d) All joints between Span Units shall be designed to be leak proof. e) Units shall be interlocked with the adjacent unit with permanent connecting plates, bolts or other method to draw and secure units to each other. All anchors and lifting hardware shall be provided with the units, including written directions for proper handling and storage of units.
