The Corporation of the City of Mississauga invites proposals from qualified consultants or consulting firms providing multi-disciplinary services including but not limited to urban design, planning, landscape architecture, historic research, archaeology, architectural history and natural heritage to undertake a feasibility study to determine if Streetsville merits being designated a Heritage Conservation District. Located in the northwest end of the city, Streetsville is one of the founding villages of Mississauga. Streetsville is a significant Cultural Heritage Landscape. As per the 2022 Conserving Heritage Landscapes Project, the Streetsville Village Core is "home to the largest concentration of historical buildings in Mississauga, with a relatively consistent scale of buildings and shop fronts within the village core and residential side streets providing a consistent historical aesthetic and scenic quality that provides a visual reminder of the early rural community. It is a distinct historic district in Mississauga and is known locally as 'The Village in the City'." To conserve this special character, the City will engage with the community to determine interest in protecting the area by by-law as a Heritage Conservation District (HCD), i.e. Part V designation under the Ontario Heritage Act. If warranted, an HCD Plan, By-law and any necessary changes to other related City policies and by-laws should be implemented. Background and Brief Scope of Work The purpose of this project is to study the area (as shown in Appendix 1) in accordance with the Ontario Heritage Act, and guidance provided by the Ontario Heritage Toolkit, to determine if and/or what parts of it merits designation under Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act, with the community engaged. If HCD(s) are not warranted, recommendations for other heritage conservation measures should be made. It is important to note that most of the properties in the core have been listed on the City's Heritage Register since 2005 when the area first became a cultural landscape. Details on the heritage status of all of the properties will be made available to the successful proponent.
