Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) is one of Island Health's largest healthcare facilities. Construction is underway for the NRGH ICU Replacement Project. This is a 3-storey building addition for up to 24 acute-care beds and supporting functions. NRGH has grown with many phases and additions from the original hospital constructed in the 1960s. New signage has been implemented over the past decades with each major growth phase, and as a result there are several different generations of signage installed when any individual section of the building was constructed. The current challenges include: amount of directional signage in parking areas; inconsistent exterior signage at main entries; various directory types, which are not easy to update; lack of visual cues at key nodes, intersections, or landmarks; visual clutter and obstructions to signage; inconsistent style, size, colour, font, and terminology of interior signage; reliance on makeshift paper signs and floor dot stickers as wayfinding workarounds. The overall objective of this project is to provide a welcoming experience for all staff and public who travel to and within NRGH. TIMELINE: Request for proposal from consulting services is closed and preferred proponent is selected. Project may be updated when it has been approved to bid for construction. Coverage is discontinued.
