The first phase of the Iowa Memorial Union modernization project will renovate 120,000 of the building’s layout. The building has extensive deferred maintenance that will be addressed as part of the project’s efforts to enhance university support for student activities, organizations, resources and success. UI will relocate and centralize student health, wellness and counseling services into a single location for student care resources. In addition, the university will upgrade and expand the building’s meeting spaces, food service options and multipurpose rooms. The project will renovate the building’s main entrance and install a covered seating area around the south side of the structure. Plans include removing metered parking and public vehicle access, creating a pedestrian-friendly public plaza. The plaza will feature improved pavement, landscaping and a direct connection to the nearby river corridor. The Iowa University Board of Regents has approved an $81.4 million University of Iowa (UI). As of March 11, 2025, this project is currently in design phase. However, information regarding design firm, construction manager, and general contractor has not been identified. Construction is slated to begin in 2025 and will be implemented across five phases.
