Morris Sheppard Dam was constructed in 1941 and consists of an Ambursen flat-slab and buttress dam structure with a service spillway, earthen embankment section, emergency spillway, intake structure in addition to a 78 inch and 42 inch controlled outlet conduit. The service spillway section consists of nine bear-trap (roof weir) gates that pass floodwater downstream. Under normal conditions, the spillway gates are hydraulically operated by reservoir head. Reservoir water is allowed to flow into the gate chamber beneath the gate, making it buoyant, then the gate leaves are unlatched and lowered to release the water. To assist with gate operations during low reservoir conditions (i.e., elevation 995 and below), a spillway pump and piping system was utilized to supply pressurized water into the underside of the gates to assist in lowering and raising the gates. Due to modifications to the spillway piping in the dam (as part of a previous project), the spillway pump and piping system was disconnected. The spillway pump and piping system also provides water for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) fish hatchery, which is located adjacent to Morris Sheppard Dam. It will be the responsibility of the CONTRACTOR to coordinate with the ENGINEER so that disruptions in service to the fish hatchery are planned with TPWD in a way that will minimize impacts to their operation. General description of Project: Upgrade the spillway pump and piping system to operate the nine bear trap gates during low reservoir conditions. In addition, the piping system will be utilized to gravity flow both cold and warm water to the fish hatchery when not being used for gate operations. System includes a new horizontal split case pump and motor, replacement of all piping as outlined in the plans, both in and outside of the pump room required for operation of the pumped system for the gates and the gravity warm and cold-water system for the fish hatchery. Location: Morris Sheppard Dam is located on the southeast corner of Possum Kingdom Lake. The work will be completed in the pump room area, down the walkway inside of the dam structure, some work to be completed in the areas of Bays 4, 5, 6, and 7, and also in the parking area from where the pipe leaves the structure, through the fenced high voltage area to make the conversion of above ground steel to below ground PVC and connect to the existing PVC pipeline in a safe distance into the parking area as marked.
