Site work and paving for a road / highway in Missoula, Montana. Completed plans call for site work for a road / highway; and for paving for a road / highway.

DESCRIPTION A. This work shall consist of clearing, grubbing, trimming, removing and disposing of timber, construction slash and debris. This work shall also include preservation of vegetation and objects free from injury or defacement, except as indicated for removal. 1.2 RELATED WORK A. Section 011100, Summary of Work B. Section 015000, Temporary Facilities and Controls C. Section 017123, Field Engineering D. Section 129300, Site Furnishings E. Section 312300, Excavation and Fill 1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Provide construction survey and layout control in conformance with Section 017123 to accurately establish the construction limits. B. Flag construction limits for review and approval by the CO prior to beginning clearing and grubbing operations. C. Conform to tree trimming standards of the International Society of Arboriculture. 1.4 MONUMENTS A. Carefully maintain all benchmarks, monuments and reference points. If disturbed or destroyed, replace at no additional cost to the Government. PART 2 - MATERIALS Not Used PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 CLEARING LIMITS A. Clearing limits and work areas specified herein are approximate. It is the Contractor's responsibility to coordinate between the documents and establish exact clearing limits based on horizontal and vertical control contained therein. B. Furnish and install flagging at sufficient intervals (maximum 50 feet on center) to identify the edges of construction limits to be apparent and visible to equipment operators, workers and the CO. Review construction limits in all areas with the CO prior to proceeding with clearing and grubbing. C. Confine all equipment, construction activity and material stockpiles to within the clearing limits and work areas, except as otherwise specified or authorized by the CO. Equipment and material used for the construction shall not be placed upon drainages, streams, adjacent wetland areas or within driplines of existing significant trees to remain within the clearing limits. D. The intent of these documents is to limit construction disturbance to a minimum distance beyond the edge of new improvements. Establish approximate construction limits as specified below, except as otherwise shown on the plans or approved by the CO: PATTEE PICNIC AREA PAVILION Page 40 1. Structures and concrete slab-on-grade: Five feet (5') beyond foundation walls or edge or concrete, or as required for excavation or embankment. 3.2 TEMPORARY EROSION AND SEDIMENTATION CONTROL A. Install approved temporary erosion control devices as specified in Section 015000. B. Maintain temporary devices until such time that finish surfaces are in place. When permanent controls are established, remove temporary devices. 3.3 CLEARING AND GRUBBING A. Where clearing is designated on the plans all debris, trees, stumps, roots and other protruding vegetative material within the clearing limits, not designated to remain, shall be cleared, grubbed, removed and disposed of except the following: B. Undisturbed stumps outside roads and pads. Stumps and roots at the toe of road and pad embankments may remain and shall be cut off below the root collar. C. Undisturbed stumps in embankment areas, provided they do not extend more than 12 inches above the original ground (measured from the uphill side) nor closer than 2 feet to the finished subgrade or 1 foot to any slope surface; and they do not interfere with the placement or compaction of embankments. D. All roots over 3 inches in diameter within roadbed and pad areas shall be grubbed to minimum depth of 6 inches below subgrade. Roots over 3 inches protruding from excavated slopes shall be cut flush with the excavated slope surface. E. Where excavation is necessary, grub the root mat to the underlying soil and remove stumps and roots. F. Except in areas to be excavated, stump holes shall be backfilled with embankment material and compacted in accordance with the specifications. G. Perform work to prevent damage to vegetation outside of the clearing limits. Trees shall be felled into the area being cleared when ground conditions, tree lean, and shape of clearing permit. Controlled felling shall be used that will ensure the direction of fall to prevent damage to property, structures, vegetation to remain or traffic. H. Fire-dangerous dead trees or unstable live trees, designated by the CO, within 15 feet beyond the clearing limits shall be cut off not more than 12 inches above the uphill ground line. Branches on remaining trees or shrubs shall be trimmed to establish clear heights above roads, trails and pads as specified in paragraph 3.5, below. I. Remove or dispose of fallen trees, stumps, brush and vegetative debris as specified 3.6, below. 3.4 PROTECTION OF EXISTING TREES A. Contracting Officer shall flag specific trees to remain within designated clearing limits. Contractor shall save and protect said trees from damage. Contractor shall be assessed a penalty of $30.00 per caliper inch - DBH for damaging or destroying any of those trees flagged by the CO through the duration of the contract. B. No equipment on wheels or tracks shall be operated or stored, or materials placed and stockpiled within the driplines of existing trees flagged to remain. 3.5 TREE TRIMMING AND ROOT PRUNING A. Tree trimming and root pruning shall be in accordance with standards established by the International Society of Arboriculture. Limb trees with clean cuts through the branch shoulder (collar). Tree limbs shall be trimmed as near flush with the trunk as practicable. B. Remove branches of trees remaining at the edges of clearing limits to establish vertical clearances as follows: 1. Access drive and parking bays: 14 feet above finish grade of paving. 2. Trails and general paving areas: 8 feet above finish grade of surfacing material. C. Prune tree roots exposed or damaged by the construction. Cut roots exposed by excavations flush with grade. 3.6 SALVAGE AND DISPOSAL A. Vegetative debris greater than 4-inches in diameter shall be cut into maximum lengths of 48 inches and left on the ground for use as firewood. Locate storage piles outside of work areas. B. Cleared vegetation slash and vegetative debris less than 4 inches in diameter shall be disposed of off-site as specified Section 024100
