A contract named "Replace Hatteras Island Trailers" is listed on the U.S. Department of the Interior website, www.sam.gov, and is accepting bids through 5 p.m. on Oct. 2. The current three-bedroom housing units have been used "for decades," primarily as seasonal summer housing for National Park Service employees, with a couple trailers used on a permanent basis, according to Public Affairs Officer Mike Barber. "There are currently two permanent employees in the housing units," he said in a Sept. 12 email. "Roughly 25 seasonal employees are in these housing units in the summer." After evaluating housing solution options, Cape Hatteras National Seashore decided that "conventional," stick-built housing would be its most affordable, high-quality option, according to Barber. Cape Hatteras National Seashore anticipates having the houses available for its seasonal employees for the summer of 2025, he said. In the interim, plans have not been finalized for where the permanent residents or next summer's staff might stay.
