The 1816 Old Town Hall building, which houses the Fredericksburg Area Museum, is showing significant signs of degradation and deterioration in its sandstone foundation and mortar due to its continuous exposure and soft nature. This project involves performing necessary repairs in a manner so that the foundation maintains as accurate a historic representation as possible. The FY 2023 budget included funds for a consultant to evaluate the foundation and develop recommended procedures for restoration. An FY 2024 appropriation in the amount of $150,000 was for urgent, time-sensitive repairs. In FY 2026, staff will determine final costs for a full-scale repair of the sandstone foundation, currently estimated at $1.1 million. The Fredericksburg Area Museum is seeking grant funding for this construction, to supplement or supplant the planned General Fund funding. HVAC replacement is scheduled for FY 2027. Due to the sensitive nature of the artifacts presented in the Museum, staff recommends replacing and upgrading the HVAC system to maintain consistent temperature and humidity control for a stable environment within the building. Project is in the FY2025-2029 Capital Improvement Plan. As of April 7, 2025, construction is expected in 2027. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
