The project is located at the University of Alberta Hospital (UAH), and Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute (MAHI), 8440 112 St. NW, Edmonton, AB T6G 2B7, Canada. ICU Expansion includes a series of inter-related construction projects and functional moves, within the University of Alberta Mazankowski Heart Institute , along with the fit out of shelled space within MAHI to provide an additional 9 new ICU beds. New ICU Beds: Using existing shelled space (5A7.040) to create 2 new inpatient beds. Demolish the existing 5A8 space and construct a new purpose built ICU of 7 beds. Reassign rooms 5A7.064 and .068 to the former shelled space will allow the existing unit to maintain its 16 beds and the new unit to use 9 beds. Many of these areas will need to be decanted to allow for construction to be completed and will be coordinated by Alberta Health Services independently. Significant mechanical/electrical system shutdowns to be completed to minimize the effect to the hospital as this is a 24 hour/7 days a week active hospital. This project includes demolition of the 5A8 area to support relocation and construction of 7 new ICU beds and support spaces. This includes Architecture, Mechanical, Electrical shut downs and IPC requirements to support the construction of new ICU spaces. It is expected that the ICU and adjacent departments remain operational with minimal reduction in level of services during renovations. Innovative methods to achieve this could be considered.
