Demolition, site work and new construction of a military facility in Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Hawaii. Completed plans call for the demolition of a military facility; and for the construction of a military facility.
The project consists of demolition of an existing training gas chamber and construction of a new facility. The area is referred to as the Boondocker Training Area. In addition, an existing 2" waterline would be capped and partially removed. Two new fire hydrants and water lateral would be installed to supply an eyewash and shower station at the new gas chamber. The existing Gas Chamber to be demoed was was constructed in 1991 out of reinforced concrete walls and roof with a concrete mat foundation. Exterior materials and finishes consist of low slope membrane roofing, painted walls / painted hollow metal doors and prefinished ventilation louvers. A main gas chamber is flanked by entry and exit vestibules. Electrical and mechanical rooms complete the facility. The new Gas Chamber will be similar in size and layout to the existing and classified as a business occupancy. Construction will be noncombustible, and the construction type will be a minimum IBC Type II-B or Type II (000) as defined in NFPA 220. The structural framing system will consist of a reinforced concrete beams/slab roof supported by concrete bearings walls. The foundation will be comprised of a mat foundation. Subgrade foundation treatment including subsurface cavity probing, proof rolling, and overexcavation and backfill will be required. The primary lateral force resisting system will consist of the concrete floor/roof slab diaphragm and concrete shear walls. Hose bibs and eye wash stations will be provided at the Gas Chamber. The gas chamber will be provided with a complete wet pipe fire sprinkler system in accordance with NFPA 13. The sprinkler system will aid in the cooling of any heated tear gas and prevent the compromise of the mechanical gas filtration system in the event of a fire. The Gas Chamber Building will be provided with mechanical ventilation equipment that will evacuate the gas inside the facility, filter it, and discharge the air through a louvered penthouse on the roof. The CS gas will be filtered through a 65% efficient roughing filter, 95% pre-filter, HEPA filter (99.99%), and a carbon adsorption filter before being exhausted to the atmosphere. The exhaust fan will be a centrifugal type exhaust fan with a high efficiency motor. Low leakage outside air dampers interlocked with the exhaust fan will be provided. The design will include vestibules (airlocks) at entry and exit points, separate from the main chamber to purge the space of gas upon entering and exiting the building. The filtration system design will meet OSHA, federal, and state requirements. The project duration is 427 days. This project is Prevailing Wage.
