Saving Project...

Renovation of an educational facility in Washington, District of Columbia. Completed plans call for the renovation of a educational facility.

The purpose of this project is to create a novel, modernized, and distinctive biomedical research facility at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), an Institution of Emerging Excellence, our nation's only urban land grant institution, the only public institute of higher education in our nation's capital, and a minority-serving, Historically Black College, and University (or HBCU). Improved research and capacity building for minority-serving institutes (MSIs), such as HBCUs, is imperative towards enhancing the diversity and productivity of the biomedical workforce. Through this National Institutes of Health (NIH) project, entitled "Creating a Specialized Technological center for Assistive Rehabilitation Research (STAR)", the University will be equipped to serve as a national hub, beacon, and gold-standard, "STAR" facility for rehabilitation related research focused on aging and impaired populations. The newly established Specialized "STAR" facility will serve as a Center for Biomechanical and Rehabilitation Engineering comprised of several laboratories that will create an environment that fosters research-driven specialized technological services focused on biomechanical and rehabilitation engineering related research, a critical need. The NIH STAR project team's overarching goal is to expand, renovate, and equip the facility. The STAR facility's foci are Gait & Balance; Assistive Robotics for Rehabilitation; Biomechanics; and Virtual Reality Rehabilitation. The project's construction scope consists of 1) renovating new and existing core facilities to create these spaces: Gait & Balance Rehabilitation Laboratory (currently called the Center for Biomechanical and Rehabilitation Engineering (CBRE) lab), Assistive & Medical Robotics Laboratory, Biomechanics Laboratories, Virtual Reality Rehabilitation Laboratories, and the STAR Researchers' Think & Work Space and 2) supply fixed equipment to the newly-renovated laboratories (such as the CAREN Motek, Bertec Immersive Lab, RTI Cab Simulator, Bertec Computerized Dynamic Posturography and ZeroG systems, and AMTI forceplates). The STAR facility will be used to investigate not only aging populations, but other impaired and unimpaired populations (e.g., veterans, amputees, survivors of stroke, and Parkinson's patients).
