The project proposed by the South Carolina Department of Transportation will convert the current intersection of US 176 (State Rd) @ S-135 (Mudville Rd) to a single lane modern roundabout. The most recent study of intersections converted to a single-lane roundabout by the SCDOT Traffic Safety Office have shown to reduce injury crashes by 79% and total crashes by 64%. This intersection was selected for improvement through the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). This program uses a data- driven strategic approach to identify locations throughout the state with high crash rates or patterns and implements safety enhancements through infrastructure-related improvements. The HSIP project selection requires an engineering study that includes an analysis of the crash data, an assessment of the field conditions, and an evaluation of the effectiveness of all potential countermeasure to ensure maximum safety benefits are obtained for the amount of funds invested. As of December 20,2023, construction was expected in Spring 2023. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change.
