The Colorado Springs Fire Department is interested in reducing wildfire risk in Austin Bluffs Areas. The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) Wildfire Mitigation Section in collaboration with the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) and Colorado Springs City Forestry is proposing to mitigate at a minimum 45.8 acres and a maximum of 74.7 acres in the City of Colorado Springs Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). The area is bordered by the University Park HOA to the east, UCCS property to the south and west, and more City of Colorado Springs Parks land to the north. The intent is to reduce critical fuel loading and modify fuel structure by limbing, thinning stand density, modification/chipping of any dead and down woody debris, and the removal of live, dead, and diseased standing vegetation. The total project area is APPROXIMATELY 74.7 Acres. 45.8 acres is mandatory to treat and the possible addition of 28.9 will depend on available funds and bids. The area consists mainly of Gambel oak, mountain mahogany, three leaf sumac, pinyon pine, ponderosa pine, Douglas-fir, and juniper. Contractors will provide bids for each unit and a summation of all combined unit bids. A map outlining the total management area, treatment units, and acreage shall be provided by the Colorado Springs Fire Department during the pre-bid site visit. Implementation of work within the Management Area will begin after contracts are awarded and work must be completed before December 31st, 2024.
