The Infrastructure and Engineering department within the Toronto Transit Commission is responsible to maintain and oversee four (4) Subway Lines; Yonge-University, Bloor- Danforth, Sheppard, and Scarborough (SRT) which will soon be decommissioned. The Subway System operates seven days a week between 05:30hrs and 01:30hrs. The system (including mainline and storage track) consists of approximately 99 miles (160 km) of single-track nonstandard gauge. The system is also supported by four subway maintenance yards consists of approximately 37 miles (60 km) of single-track.
The Subway System is comprised of the following:
230 feet radius (min) in the yard,
380 feet radius (min) on mainline
A combination of box sections, circular tunnels, open cut and bridge sections.
The track construction varies from concrete invert to timber or concrete ties on ballast to wood tie or concrete slab bridges.
The power is derived from a 600-volt power rail.
The running rail is comprised of 100 ARA-A or 115 RE
Sections of the rail are still the original 1950's rail construction whereas recent construction of rail is comprised of modern head hardened rail.
Joints are a combination of flash butt welds, thermite welds, insulated joints or standard bolted joints.
Additionally, there is an adjacent 150 lb. DC power rail, an 85 lb. CPR or 100 RA horizontally mounted restraining rail on tight curves (below 2,600' radius, or 2degrees), and various cables, etc. as shown on the enclosed drawings.
All equipment intended for operation within the subway environment must function properly near high voltage. TIMELINE:
A Request For Proposals has been issued by Track and Structure Engineering, a division within Operations and Infrastructure group of the Toronto Transit Commission seeking the services of Engineering Consultant(s) specializing in rail transit to provide track and structure engineering support, track maintenance and track design expertise for the TTC Subway transit lines.
The term of the Contract shall be for three (3) years from the date of Notification of Award with an option to extend two additional one-year periods. If a Task has been started prior to the original scheduled Contract Completion date, the Task shall be carried out until completion. A Contract Amendment in accordance with GC17- Changes to the Work, will be issued to extend the Contract Completion date accordingly.
