The City of Independence is recognized as a Certified Local Government by the State of Missouri. Independence has one local historic district and 27 individually-listed historic local landmarks. The city's Historic Preservation Division, under the Community Development Department, utilizes design guidelines to provide direction to historic property owners to assist in maintenance and restoration efforts. The current design guidelines were last updated in 2011. The city's Preservation Division is looking to update these text heavy guidelines to produce a more streamlined, user-freindly document relying more on illustrations and graphics to better convey appropriate treatments. The final document will be made available on the city's website for reference. Deadline for questions is 5:00 p.m. local time on November 7, 2023. Paper, fax, or email bids will NOT be accepted and will not be returned to sender.
