Site work and new construction of a mixed-use development in Louisville, Kentucky. Completed plans call for the construction of a educational facility; and for site work for a educational facility.
https://www.bizjournals.com/louisville/news/2024/02/14/w-e-b-dubois-academy-to-get-56m-new-campus.html JCPS to build $56 million school for W.E.B. DuBois Academy (RENDERINGS) Jefferson County Public Schools selected a site in Newburg to move one of its newest schools. The school system is proposing a $56.3 million facility be built at 4929 Poplar Level Road as part of a new W.E.B. DuBois Academy campus, according to a permit application filed with Louisville Metro Government. The Jefferson County School District Finance Corporation approved the purchase of four properties on Tuesday for $1.34 million to build the school, JCPS Communications Manager Mark Hebert told Business First. The 178,000-square-foot facility will feature a three-story academic wing and a gymnasium. It will become part of a multibuilding campus, which will include Thomas Jefferson Middle School and the Unseld Early Learning Center, according to the filing. You can check out renderings of the planned school below. Hebert said DuBois Academy needs a new campus because JCPS does not currently have an available building big enough to house the program at full capacity. Once completed, the new DuBois Academy will be able to educate as many as 1,050 students grades six through 12, and will sit just one mile away from its current location. Construction is set to begin in the spring, Hebert said, with an anticipated opening date of August 2026. The permit application comes two years after JCPS revealed a $1.1 billion facilities plan that included the construction of three new schools. In addition to DuBois Academy, JCPS proposed a new school for Grace James Academy of Excellence and a new 1,000-student middle school in West Louisville, according to a WDRB report from the time. JCPS had yet to select locations for the new facilities, according to the report. At the time, the school system expected DuBois Academy and James Academy to cost $39.9 million each to build. DuBois Academy is an all-boys magnet school that opened in 2018, according to the school's website. It offers an Afrocentric, multicultural curriculum that focuses on leadership attributes, such as perseverance, resilience, initiative, discipline and empathy. Hebert said construction of the new DuBois Academy campus does not face any additional approval hurdles. He did not provide updates on the progress of the other two proposed schools. Columbus, Ohio-based Moody Nolan is the architect on the project. The selection of a contractor is currently out for bid, Hebert said. ____________________ Jefferson County Public Schools will receive sealed bids and award contract(s) for: NEW SCHOOL BUILDING AT W.E.B.
