https://www.kxii.com/2024/08/08/denison-isd-talks-elementary-school-construction-new-clear-bag-policy/ DENISON, Texas (KXII) - Denison’s first day of school is Tuesday, and superintendent David Kirkbride said the district is ready to rock and roll. ”This is a time where we want to pull together as a district and a community,” Kirkbride said. “That’s really been our focus as we’ve been preparing for this school year.” As that day approaches, Kirkbride said things may look a little different at Lamar and Terrell elementary schools. “Both of those campuses have undergone significant construction projects as part of our bond,” he said. Both schools are getting entrance and parking lot overhauls. As of right now, Terrell is finished but there’s still some work to do over at Lamar. “The drop-off and the pickup at both Terrell and Lamar is totally different than it has been in previous years,” Kirkbride said. “If parents, children go to those two campuses, they really need to be looking for communication coming out on the campuses about that.” Another big change is Denison ISD Police’s new clear bag policy. “We are getting in line with other schools that are in our district,” Denison ISD Police Chief Paul Neumann said. “It’s nothing that that should be a surprise to anybody, but it’s a necessary step as we go forward.” Students can still carry their normal backpacks on school days but for any school events like football games or theater performances, the only bags allowed in are clear tote bags, small clutches, or diaper bags - no purses, solid totes, or backpacks. “Our number one objective is to make sure that everybody that attends the event has the best time they possibly can, enjoys the atmosphere,” Neumann said. “Behind the scenes, our number one goal is to create a safe environment not only for our spectators, but the athletes as well.”
