The Simpson Creek Headwaters Restoration at Landen-Deerfield Park project proposes to create a signature project in a highly visited and visible park that will deliver multiple benefits in the areas of pollutant removal, storm water management, wildlife habitat enhancement, environmental education, passive recreation, and infrastructure. It will reestablish an important headwater stream and tributary to the Little Miami River, a designated State and National Wild and Scenic River and one of Ohio EPA's defined Outstanding State Waters. The project will modify an existing and degraded impoundment (the 2.8-acre LandenDeerfield Park Lake) to reintroduce wetland habitat, natural channel function, vernal pools, and riparian buffers after 40+ years of inundation. Rehabilitation is expected to increase aquatic and terrestrial species diversity, abundance, and richness while reintroducing aquatic functions in a watershed situated within one of the most heavily used public parks in Warren County. Proposed features include up to 0.8 acres of native wetland habitat and vernal pools, up to 900 linear feet of intermittent/headwater stream reestablishment, 1.5 acres of riparian habitat establishment, 2.8 acres of upland buffer establishment, and an approximately 0.5-acre extant pond feature that incorporates a native littoral shelf, or wetland fringe. Crushed limestone access paths, a boardwalk/ observation platform, interpretive signage, and nature play elements will enable tens of thousands of park visitors annually to interact with the restored stream and access educational opportunities.
