Site work for a municipal facility in Prince George, British Columbia. Completed plans call for site work for a municipal facility.
The Prince George Natural Resource District (PGNRD) requires the manual removal of surface fuels and the pruning and thinning of ladder fuels to reduce the wildfire risk within the Norman Lake area. This area has been identified in the PGNRD WRR Tactical Plan as having an increased wildfire risk due to the fuel type, prevailing winds, and interface potential with the Norman Lake Community. Norman Lake site has high recreation values. The outcome of the manual treatment will create a more easily defensible space for wildfire suppression by reducing the surface fuel loading and thinning and pruning of the stand. The reduction of surface fuel loading and ladder fuels and thinning of crown spacing will lessen the possibility of wildfire reaching the crown of the forest. This will allow for greater aerial suppression effectiveness as well as direct attack suppression methods by wildfire fighters on the ground. Initial Attack success should increase with wildfires starts within the Fuel Treatment Units due to decreased surface fuel loading. The manual treatment along Norman Lake Road will create safer access and egress for Norman Lake community members as well as emergency personnel; Norman Lake Road is the only maintained route into and out of the community.
