By Kenya Ross Published: May. 7, 2024 at 11:54 PM GMT+5:30 MONROE, La. (KNOE) - The City of Ruston approved a contract with a Monroe construction company on Monday, April 6, to build a new fire station. Consideration to enter into a contract with Grindstone Construction to build a fire station was on the regular meeting agenda for the City of Ruston. The Ruston Fire Department is headquartered at 920 E. Georgia Avenue. Fire Chief Chris Womack said the new station, which will be known as Fire Station No. 2, will be built at 1609 West California Avenue. Before the regular meeting on Monday, Womack said if approved, the new fire structure would house a fire prevention bureau and up to six beds. Womack said it’s time to have another fire station to meet the needs of Ruston’s growing population. “We have two universities - Grambling, Louisiana Tech; both growing, both are adding things. Businesses are coming to Ruston. So, as first responders, we have to keep up with the needs. And usually, we’re playing catch up; instead of keeping up, we’re catching up. And we’ve got have enough staffing. We’ve got to have the equipment,” said Womack. Womack told KNOE that the approved construction company will build the fire station from the ground up on West California Ave. “The lot was a previous trailer park that had a lot of older, rundown trailers. It’s going to be a blessing to the community and to Ruston,” said Womack. “We’ve removed some of those old trailers, so the new neighbors were happy. We cleaned up that area. And they’ll have emergency services right there beside them, and it’ll increase our presence in that area,” said Womack. The chief said Monday before the meeting that he would introduce a $4.5 million bid at the regular meeting. __________________________________________________________________________________________ https://www.whsv.com/video/2024/05/07/ruston-city-council-approves-monroe-construction-company-build-new-fire-station/ Ruston city council approves Monroe construction company to build new fire station ____________________________ Construction of Ruston Fire Station No. 2.
