Installation of culverts at 2 locations near Finland Minnesota. One Aluminum Box Culvert that is supplied by MN DNR and the other Aluminized Arch culverts. Includes removal of existing, roadway improvements, and restoration of the sites. Est. Completion Date: Sept. 1, 2024 Project Background and Description The Baptism River Watershed Culvert Replacement project will provide improved fish passage and stream connectivity in two subwatersheds of the larger Baptism River watershed located near Finland, Minnesota: 1. Unnamed Stream (“Blesener”)(Sonju Lake Road) - 47°28'42"N 91°09'35"W 2. Finland Creek (Silver Hill Drive) - 47°25'19.4"N 91°14'59.3"W The two crossings being replaced are undersized and do not allow for fish passage at important times of the year. Fish passage is important for the native brook trout population to allow them to access habitat and cold water in the watershed. This project will replace two crossings with culverts designed for bankfull width crossings with natural substrate placed in the bottom of the culverts. In addition, the roadways will be raised in two locations to allow for larger structures to be installed. The goals of this project include: 3. Installing culverts that will allow for brook trout passage during all flows and reconnect fish habitat. 4.Installing culverts that will convey water, sediment, and debris that is naturally occurring in the watershed. 5. Installing floodplain culverts to allow for floodplain conveyance during high flows.
