The Department of Administration seeks a designer for developing the scope and scale of renovations required for the State of North Carolina Bicentennial Plaza in Raleigh. The Plaza is the processional space between the North Carolina State Capital and the North Carolina Legislative Building. It spans over 450 feet between W. Edenton Street and W. Jones Street and is tangential to State buildings assigned to NC Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services, NC Museum of Natural Sciences, and NC Museum of History. The Bicentennial Plaza was constructed in 1988 and is showing signs of wear that comes from heavy usage associated with such areas. Significant outdoor cultural and educational events are hosted by the Plaza year-round. Renovation includes removal/replacement of cracked and broken pavement, steps, walls, curbs planters and seating surfaces, as well as improvements to drainage, lighting, and other utilities. The existing underground cistern and piping located in the general area will be left in space and filled in. Utilities services at the Plaza level to support temporary outdoor event assets will be required. DOA wishes to engage a North Carolina-based design firm with architecture or architecture/engineering expertise to lead the planning, design, and construction effort for this project. DOA reserves the option of retaining the selected design firm to continue with an expanded project scope on or about the Bicentennial Plaza area.
