As of August 2, 2024, project has been awarded to Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties, Inc., but the awarded amount is not available. The Fort Myers Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) is seeking builders, developers, or contractors with experience in construction of affordable housing to develop the property located at 2200 Jaylen Watkins Way, Fort Myers. To maximize our families' success, organizations submitting proposals must demonstrate a proven track record in both residential construction and offering comprehensive housing counseling/education programs. The City has approximately 1,000 employees serving a population of approximately 96,755 full time permanent residents with a population growth of 12% between 2020 and 2022. According to the Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau, nearly 4.5 million people visit Fort Myers each year and spend over $4 billion dollars while in the area. Fort Myers has experienced unprecedented growth in its tax base, as the past (3), year over year percentage increases, were double digit. The City added a total of $5.0 billion to its tax base over the past five years, or 75.6%. The City is situated between Tampa and Miami along scenic U.S. Highway 41, also known as Tamiami Trail. Recent accolades for the City of Fort Myers include top ranking for best places to live, to retire, and to start a new business, safest cities in America, #4 college town in Florida, and most recently the 3rd fastest growing place by U.S News and World Report. The City of Fort Myers is committed to providing exceptional municipal services to residents, businesses and visitors in a fiscally responsible manner while preserving the City's rich history, diverse culture, and charming lifestyle. On either side of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard are two residential neighborhoods where a tight-knit community has become a haven for cultivating a mixed-income, walkable and economically-viable family zone. Developing strategies to create above-average wage jobs that improve residents' quality of life is an objective that not only benefits the immediate area, but the City of Fort Myers as a whole. This is part of the vision for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard redevelopment area. Its commercial corridor will support its residents through an enhanced level of service, while those residents will support the local businesses. The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard redevelopment area, comprised of four sub-areas, is positioned east of the Downtown redevelopment area and south of the East Fort Myers redevelopment area. It is located south of Billy's Creek and north of Canal Street.
