As of June 26, 2025, the State of Vermont’s plan to build a new juvenile rehabilitation facility is on hold following the withdrawal of its proposal to construct a 14-bed secure treatment center in Vergennes due to zoning issues and community opposition. The project, intended to replace the closed Woodside Juvenile Rehabilitation Center, had been in development since 2022, with formal proposals and community engagement efforts taking place through early 2025. After withdrawing from the Vergennes site in May 2025, the Vermont Department for Children and Families is now reassessing alternative locations, and no new site or construction timeline has been announced.
