Renovation of a clubhouse / community center in Pella, Iowa. Conceptual plans call for the renovation of a clubhouse / community center.

This project consists of roof replacement, exterior tuck pointing, window replacement, and structural repairs. It is important to note, with the acquisition of the former Pella Early Learning Center facilities, Council will need to determine the future city use of the Pella Memorial Building before authorizing this project. As background, the building currently serves as home to the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Originally, when this building was acquired from Marion County, there were plans to utilize the Memorial Building for administrative offices and relocate the veteran's groups to a new community center/recreation building. Since that time, Council has decided to renovate the current Community Center and build a new indoor recreation center. In addition, the city intends to utilize the recently acquired Pella Early Learning Center facilities for additional office space which the Memorial Building was intended to serve. Staff recommends that as the city prepares for the renovation of the Community Center and the former Pella Early Learning Center, we discuss if either of these buildings could accommodate the veteran's groups currently housed in the Memorial Building. This evaluation should occur before city funds are dedicated to repairing the Memorial Building, which is tentatively scheduled to occur in FY 25. Finally, it is important to note, the proposed could be required in the near future for the city to maintain property insurance on the Memorial Building. The project is include in the city's 2024-2025 Capital Improvement Program (CIP) *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change.
