The Municipality of the County of Inverness (MCI), in collaboration with project partners, including the Seawall Trail Society, the Mi'kmaq of Nova Scotia, Build Nova Scotia, NS Department of Environment & Climate Change, and NS Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage, are seeking proposals from experienced hiking trail design and construction firms to finalize the design and alignment of the Nova Scotia Jajiktek Seawall Hiking Trail system, including three remote accommodations sites, and then to construct the trail system including the accommodations according to the finalized plan. The planned project completion date is July 1st, 2026. The Nova Scotia Jajiktek Seawall Trail is envisioned as a unidirectional 48 km hike (south to north) from Pleasant Bay/Red River to Meat Cove which, where appropriate and in line with safety and environmental protections, maximizes the breathtaking coast views along the route to provide an exceptional hiking experience. The goal is to to build a world-class hiking trail adhering to the vision of a light-on-the-land, backcountry, single file, 18-inch tread, that is built to last, designed to withstand erosion, with minimal structures, and requiring minimal upkeep over the lifetime of the trail (anticipated to be at least 50 years). This RFP aims to engage a principal design-build contractor who can lead all aspects of the design and construction, navigating the complexities of creating a sustainable and environmentally integrated trail system that minimizes ecological impact while maximizing the visitor experience and safety, employing Etuaptmumk (Two-Eyed Seeing https://www.uinr.ca/lisa-on-two-eyed-seeing/) throughout all aspects of the project.
