The Hollenbeck Park Lake Rehabilitation Project is a proposed project led by the City of Los Angeles, Department of Public Works, LA Sanitation and Environment (LASAN) in partnership with the City of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Department (RAP) to implement a regional multi-benefit stormwater project in Hollenbeck Park and the adjacent neighborhood. The goal is to improve water quality in the Boyle Heights neighborhood, Hollenbeck Park Lake (Lake), and the Upper Los Angeles River Watershed (ULAR). This project proposes multi-benefit components consisting of stormwater diversions, capture and treatment structures, and green street network components, the project will enhance the community. Proposed green street elements within the watershed will improve air quality and provide aesthetically appealing green spaces for residents to enjoy year-round. The addition of about 50 trees in the park and the surrounding area will provide shade, reduce heat island effect, and cool the area for pedestrians and people engaged in active recreation. Any stormwater capture structures such as drywells or subsurface storage units will be mostly unseen from the surface (aside from a few covered access holes). These structures will reduce flooding, especially during significant storm events. Constructed wetlands and recirculation will provide water quality and community benefits. Overall, these improvements will be a newer, fresher, and greener revitalization to this neighborhood, all without displacing any residents or businesses. Per the owner, as of November 22, 2024, this project is in the pre-design phase. Owner states that the contract to award a design team is still on-going. The owner states that construction is currently anticipated to begin in 2028.
