Renovation of a museum in Greensboro, North Carolina. Design plans call for the renovation of a museum.
As of November 6, 2025, this project is in the design phase. Construction is expected to begin in May of 2026. *Previous solicitation listed below for reference:* Project Budget $1,700,000 UNC Greensboro is seeking letters of interest from qualified professionals for the project entitled, Weatherspoon Art Museum: Center for Art and Human Understanding. The Weatherspoon Art Museum, situated in the Anne and Benjamin Cone Building at UNC Greensboro, is a nationally recognized teaching museum. Consistently accredited by the American Alliance of Museums since 1995, its collection of modern and contemporary art is considered one of the strongest in the Southeast, and its exhibitions and programs establish it as a hub for interdisciplinary thinking and learning in the Greensboro community. The scope of this project is to renovate approximately 4,000 square feet of first-floor galleries, storage, and transition spaces to create the Weatherspoon's new Center for Art and Human Understanding. The program consists of a new reception area, collections study/storage, and a flexible object-study gallery to advance the work of Weatherspoon curators, UNC Greensboro faculty, students, and museum interns. The Center will provide ready access to the museum's internationally renowned collection of 7,500 works of art through purpose-designed spaces for teaching, learning, and research. The Center will dramatically increase the usefulness of the collection for academic and community engagement and student wellness. The Center aims to transform teaching at UNC Greensboro, making the museum an even greater asset for student success, and to serve as a national model for its innovative programs and engagement with the greater community. Full design services through construction administration and closeout will be required for this project, including a programming/budget confirmation phase. To meet academic program and museum schedule requirements, the project's targeted construction completion is July 2026.
