https://www.wabi.tv/2026/04/15/maine-dot-avoids-full-closure-aroostook-river-bridge-during-rehabilitation-work/ CARIBOU, Maine (WAGM) - The Maine DOT says the Aroostook River Bridge in Caribou will no longer need to fully close during upcoming rehabilitation work. The project, which will replace the existing concrete bridge deck and rehabilitate or replace select structural steel members, had previously been expected to use staged construction for four months, followed by a full bridge closure for five months. That plan raised concerns among local drivers. In response, the Maine DOT said: “It was determined that the five-month-long, full closure using Route 161 and/or Grimes Road as an off-site detour will not be necessary. We will be able to allow at least one lane of alternating traffic on site throughout construction. This should alleviate concerns about a substantial traffic detour.” Maine DOT says it is still working to determine how long the project will take, but notes that avoiding a full closure will likely extend the overall construction timeline. ----------------------------------------------------------- The purpose of this rehabilitation project is to: 1) Replace the deficient bridge deck 2) Perform structural repair of truss members resolving flame cut areas 3) Address bridge joint deterioration and eliminate bridge joints when possible 4) Perform structural steel repairs and replacement related to lateral restraint system including existing lateral braces and cross-frames
