https://www.ktiv.com/2024/12/24/6th-street-bridge-reconstruction-chapel-sale-approved-by-sioux-city-city-council/ 6th Street bridge reconstruction and chapel sale approved by Sioux City city council A bridge that’ll serve a lot more traffic when the Gordon Drive viaduct is replaced is getting an upgrade. Monday night the city council agreed to accept $1.5 million from the Iowa Department of Transportation to repair the Sixth Street bridge that connects the downtown to the east side over the Floyd River. The bridge deck and sidewalks will be reconstructed, and the total cost is about $3 million, but 90% of that would be paid for by the state and federal governments. “That’s our way downtown once they take the Gordon Drive bridge down,” said Sioux City Mayor Bob Scott. “We’ll get that done before the Gordon Drive viaduct goes out of commission.” The bridge reconstruction is expected to be completed ahead of the Gordon Drive viaduct project that’s slated to begin in 2028. Sioux City continues to look for someone who would buy, and move, a historic chapel that sits near the Sioux Gateway airport. The chapel, which dates back to World War II, and several residential housing units, sit on 22 acres of land the city wants to sell for development. Monday night the council agreed to look for a buyer. If that falls through, salvageable materials could be sold and the building demolished; if that happens, the city will look to preserve as much of the history of the chapel as possible. That would include a plaque at the Mid America Museum of Aviation and Transportation that would commemorate the church, and a page on its history would be added to the Airport’s website. “It does have a lot of history there, a lot of airmen got married there before they went across the pond to go fight in the war. It has a lot of historical value so we’re going to do as much as we can to save as much as we can,” said Mayor Bob Scott. If the city is unable to find any buyers, it will demolish and cleanup the area. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the city of Sioux City, On 6TH ST, Over FLOYD RIVER, S27 T89 R47 As of March 25, 2025, the project is in Final Planning status.
