Site work for a museum in Hampton, Virginia. Completed plans call for site work for a museum.

The Fort Monroe Authority is seeking a well-qualified general contractor with experience in pedestrian scale memorial site work to construct a significantly important memorial plaza as well as supporting infrastructure. The memorial plaza will be located at Old Point Comfort, Virginia, the site of Fort Monroe; the largest stone fort in America, and the site of the first Africans to land in English speaking North America in 1619. * The African Landing Memorial will commemorate a significant moment that reverberates through more than 400 years of American history--the landing of the first Africans in the Virginia Colony in English North America in August 1619 at Point Comfort. Point Comfort, now part of Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia, was a pivotal site where 20 and odd Africans, brought aboard the White Lion, were traded for provisions. This event marked the beginning of African presence and cultural contributions in what would become the United States. * The design is inspired by the spirit of Sankofa, which teaches us the importance of learning from the past to build the future. The geometry of the plaza is centered on the line to Angola, a landscape feature that points to the native land of many of those forcibly brought to the English colonies. Angola was a significant source of enslaved Africans, with thousands taken from the West Central Africa region during the transatlantic slave trade. The Fort Monroe Authority is in talks with representatives of the Angolan government to establish an even more meaningful relationship. * The African Landing Memorial and Plaza will expand the site, already a pilgrimage destination for many, acknowledging that the origins of a culture in this country began at this point. This memorial will serve as a reminder of the resilience and contributions of Africans and their descendants in the fabric of American history. Sealed bids are invited for the construction of Fort Monroe African Landing Memorial, Project Code 360-B3360-012 at Fort Monroe, VA. The project is generally described an outdoor monument situated on the shore of the Chesapeake Bay to the south edge of the Fort Monroe National Monument. A Bid Bond is required. PLAN HOLDERS LIST NOT MAINTAINED.
