The Old Barracks Museum was constructed in 1758 to house British colonial troops during the French and Indian War and is the last remaining colonial barracks in the country. During the American Revolution, the Barracks was used primarily by the Continental Army including as an army hospital. However, in December 1776 when the British and Hessian soldiers occupied Trenton, the Old Barracks was also under their control until General George Washington and his troops conducted a surprise attack on Trenton, thus helping to turn the tide of the war due to the successes at the battles of Trenton and Princeton. After these successes, the Old Barracks came under the auspices of the Continental Army and were used as an army hospital, primarily for the remainder of the war. Although a significant building with a deep history in the successes of the American Revolution, parts of the building were demolished in the nineteenth century for the State House. It wasn't until the early twentieth century as part of a greater appreciation for early American history and General George Washington that the building was restored. Today, although exhibiting a complex building chronology, the Old Barracks speaks to an important era in American history that is vital to preserve, especially as the country enters its 250th year. The Old Barracks successfully opened as a museum in 1903 and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973. Today, the restored barracks is home to an interpretive museum, galleries, gift shop, and meeting space. The work includes where indicated. 1. Repair and restoration of stairs, rails and treads leading into the site at the main entrance. 2. Replacement of wood shingle (cold) roofing system, including dormers, over Soldiers' Barracks. The Officer Quarters roof is excluded, except for portions of the soffit that require repair and the side walls of the dormers, which require replacements. 3. Cleaning and repointing (limited) existing chimneys. 4. Installation of new copper flashings and roof drainage system at Soldiers' Barracks 5. Repair and restoration of first and second story exterior stairs and porches, including rails and stair treads, on Soldiers Barracks, and repair of carpentry including floor boards. 6. Repair and repaint, where needed, of exterior woodwork, including Officer Quarters, for such elements as cornices, fascia, rakes, and other related building elements exhibiting deterioration. 7. Repair damaged masonry over limited exterior doors and windows; the brick at some arches is loose. 8. Select repointing where missing at the body of both buildings including minor crack repair using traditional masonry conservation techniques. 9. Select repairs of existing wood windows including glass replacement, new glazing putty, and limited finish carpentry repairs. 10. Remove and replace exterior board fence surrounding entire site including footings and fence posts using a mix of existing on-site materials and new materials to match. This work includes providing new lintels in the same manner as the existing structure for the front and south gates. 11. Provide temporary security fencing during removal and construction of new perimeter fence. 12. Provide temporary barriers and signage to permit use of the building during construction.
