New construction and renovation of a mixed-use development in Charlotte, North Carolina. Conceptual plans call for the construction of a educational facility; and for the renovation of a educational facility.
Coulwood STEM Academy is a public magnet middle school in northwest Charlotte serving approximately 609 students in grades 6 through 8, with a curriculum centered on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Cmsk12 The school enrolls 100% economically disadvantaged students. U.S. News & World Report The existing building has aged well past its useful life, driving it onto CMS's replacement list. Coulwood has not yet been assigned to a specific construction wave or given an official design start or completion date. CMS is executing its 30 bond projects in sequenced batches, with the first 12 projects slated for completion between 2025 and 2028. CMS Planner Dennis LaCaria noted that it will take about five years to get all 30 projects underway, and it could be 2030 by the time the last ones open. WFAE Based on the sequencing of projects announced to date — and the fact that Coulwood has not appeared on any of the published construction schedules for the first 12 projects — it is most likely positioned in the third or fourth wave, with a realistic target opening somewhere in the 2029–2030 range. No architect of record or construction manager has been selected for the Coulwood replacement project. CMS selected a trio of firms — Boomerang Design, LeChase, and Leeper — as program-level project managers for the bond program, a group with more than 280 projects completed with the district over 25 years. WFAE These firms oversee the overall program and manage individual project architects and contractors as projects are activated, but they are not the architects of record for individual buildings. When Coulwood enters the design phase, a project-specific architect will be procured through CMS's standard RFQ process.
