https://www.al.com/sports/2024/11/university-of-north-alabama-receives-bid-of-under-50-million-for-new-stadium-construction.html Fite Building Company was the low bidder in the process of building a new on-campus football and soccer field at Bank Independent Stadium with a base bid of under $50 million, a report from TimesDaily said. According to the article, Fite's base bid was $49,758,275; the company's initial $53 million bid was cut by over $3 million before bids were open. Roy Anderson Corp. out of Mississippi had a base of $51,180,000, which was cut from $54 million. The board will make the final decision in what direction to move with the contract. Based in Decatur, Fite Building Company's notable projects include the Huntsville-Madison County Veterans Memorial, Alabama Center for the Arts, and Decatur Heritage Christian Academy; the company is also working on the new LaGrange Residence Hall at UNA, set to open in 2026. The university broke ground on the Bank Independent Stadium complex in June. The complex includes a multi-purpose turf field and track that can be used for football, soccer, and any other academic, athletic, intramural, or community activity. The football team has played its home games in Braly Municipal Stadium, whcih is owned by the Florence city school system, since 1949. It's also the home stadium of the Florence High School football team. According to a June release, the project's base cost is approximately $65 million. The UNA Board authorized the school to borrow up to $35 million towards that cost, with the school having already raised around $25 million. "As with most things here at UNA, it takes everyone doing their part and working together for these opportunities to make the most impact," said Will Trapp, President Pro Tempore of UNA's Board, in June. "We have received great support from alumni and friends, community organizations, and, of course, from our naming rights partner, Bank Independent. "That base of funding will be supplemented by enhancements in athletic revenue from having our own stadium. We also view this investment in UNA Athletics as one for the Shoals community as well. Our hope is that it will be a place for people to come together in support of this University and make memories that will join them to us and to each other. We need to invest in things that bring us together. Our students asked for this years ago, and it's exciting to see it finally happening." The football team moved from Division II to the FCS ranks in 2018 and joined the ASUN Conference in 2022. The Lions are 3-8 this year and will close out the regular season with a road game against Eastern Kentucky. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Bank Independent Stadium - New Football Stadium for the University of North Alabama This project will include: The project will consist of the new football and soccer stadium with associated playing surface and seating bowl with diversified seating opportunities and new home team tunnel connection to Flowers Hall to utilize adjacency of existing facility.
