Identified during the Fire Pro Study completed in 1986, included in the City of Nashua Master Plan of 2020, and again noted as a priority in the Emergency Services Consulting International Master Plan delivered in 2021 is the need for a new fire station to protect the citizens in Wards 1 and 2. Where four of our six stations are now over 40 years old, we need to be realistic when considering how much longer the suspended floor at Station One can continue to support a ladder truck weighing over 80,000 pounds and an engine weighing close to 50,000 pounds. If approved, the Building Conditions Assessment Study will assist us by providing an idea of the remaining useful life of our facilities and anticipated annual maintenance expenses. With the buildout of the route 101A corridor almost complete, through our response studies, Stations 1 and 5 both respond to the Amherst Street corridor and Broad Street. In previous studies, locating a station in the area of Thornton Road was identified as being desirable. When considering our projected run responses; the cost of needed renovations to our current Station 5 and the anticipated renovation and ongoing maintenance costs at Station 1, it makes fiscal sense to consider a new station that would house an engine and a ladder truck. This would not require additional staffing.
