The Ferguson Project is located within the Merced River Canyon on State Route 140 approximately 7 miles east of El Portal near Yosemite National Park. The purpose of this permanent restoration project is to restore full highway access to State Route 140 on the existing alignment that has been blocked by a rockslide that occurred in 2006. Traffic is currently detoured around the rockslide via two temporary bridges that cross over the designated Wild and Scenic Merced River onto a single lane narrow USFS road (Incline Road) using one-way traffic control signals. SCOPE OF WORK This permanent restoration project is being delivered in three work packages. The first work package began in Spring 2015 and was completed in November 2015. The second work package began in Spring 2021 and was completed in the Fall of 2024. The final work package proposes to construct the Rockshed structure in segments from outside the slide zone. Casting beds will be built at both ends of the rock shed, and the rock shed segments will be moved into place. The rock shed will be 700 feet long providing two 12-foot lanes, and two 8 foot outside shoulders. The rock shed will be a reinforced concrete box structure supported on concrete piles and anchored with tiebacks into the west canyon wall. Retaining walls will be required on the approach ends of the structure to retain slope cuts that will be necessary for construction. Native material will be placed on top of the structure to help provide protection from future slides and rock falls. The existing detour will be restored to its pre-construction condition and the two temporary bridges will be removed.
