Site work and new construction of a mixed-use development in Charlotte, North Carolina. Conceptual plans call for the construction of a municipal facility; for site work for a municipal facility; and playground / park / athletic field.
This project will reconstruct and relocate McDowell Nature Center, the County's first and oldest nature center, which opened in 1985. The facility will be relocated closer to the entrance of the nature preserve, using the center as a gateway education and information center for the 1,130-acre nature preserve. The project scope will include a new nature center which will include educational exhibits, multipurpose and meeting rooms, administrative spaces, restrooms, and associated site improvements. Additional funding is needed for improvements to McDowell Nature Preserve which may include the campground, Copperhead Island, and maintenance compound areas. As of September 26, 2025, this project is included in the county's 2026 Budget. Funding is allotted for FY 2028-2031. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change. The content management team will continue to pursue additional details as they become available.
