Metro and its partners were awarded $2 million for the TV Highway Community Connections Plan through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Reconnecting Communities Grant pilot program, the regional agency announced Thursday, Jan. 16. The funding will support plans to make transit along the 16-mile corridor between the Beaverton Transit Center and Forest Grove faster, safer and more reliable — with investments focusing on improving transit access and ensuring more efficient bus service. “This funding for the Tualatin Valley Highway Community Connections Plan represents a transformative opportunity for the communities we serve along this vital corridor,” said Nuhamin Eiden, interim executive director at Unite Oregon and a steering committee member for the TV Highway Equity Coalition. The project aligns with a community-led equitable development strategy, prioritizing community involvement in transportation planning. The strategy aims to identify opportunities for collaboration among nonprofit, government and private sector partners to support local communities and businesses before and after transportation improvements. “Investing in equitable engagement and development ensures that the voices of the most impacted communities, who have historically been excluded, shape the future of their neighborhoods,” Eiden said in a release. “By prioritizing placemaking and sustainable transit solutions like bus-rapid transit, this initiative will create a more connected, resilient and thriving ecosystem for communities, offering better access to jobs, housing and essential services while preserving the area's unique character and minimizing the risk of displacement and gentrification.” The funding was jointly awarded to the TV Highway Transit Project and Metro and TriMet’s 82nd Avenue transit project in Portland, totaling $4 million.
