Abandoned Mine Lands Carbondale (Hill) Portals Phase II Construction. The Carbondale Phase II project is located in the old small coal mining community of Carbondale, just outside of Smithers, WV, in Fayette County. The site description of the project is to control drainage from an abandon deep mine (circa 1920 - no detail mapping). The general project scope will consist of ten (10) mine portal closures and drainage conveyance (pipes, channels, trenches, road crossings, etc.) to direct mine discharge to new constructed drainage conveyance (channels) at the edge of the mine bench to protect the hillside from wash outs and/or hillside slides or slips. Wet seals are proposed at all locations. Directions to Site from Charleston: follow State Route 60 East to the town of Smithers. Bear left, located next to the McDonalds, onto Cannelton Hollow Rd / County Route 2. Travel 0.6 miles, cross new bridge at Cannelton Road / County Route 2/2. Approximately 225 ft turn right you have arrived at site. The GPS location is as follows: N: 38_ 11' 09.6521" W: 81_ 17' 54.7335"
