The next project would improve drainage for the Borley Heights neighborhood south of Tram Road. The project would reduce flooding in this area, which is caused by an inadequate culvert to the Griffing Ditch under the Lower Neches Valley Authority Beaumont Irrigation Canal, which cannot handle floodwaters. It will bring all of the homes in the benefit area above the 500-year flood elevation. The project would add three new culverts, improve drainage paths and construct properly-sized canal crossings, each equipped with one-way flap gates to prevent backflow. A new drainage channel would also be built, alongside improvements to existing channels to carry water efficiently. As of March 17, 2025, the district is requesting $1.14 million to cover the local match for a grant it’s already been awarded from FEMA for 75% of the project costs.
