(WBRC) - President Trump vowed to significantly widen I-65 during his 2023 visit to Alabama. “I said, ‘What can I do for this great state?” Trump said in Montgomery. “‘You can make a six laner’. Does everyone agree that is a big deal? Ok, we will get that done on the first day ok, first day.” Now months into his second presidency, WBRC is asking the leader of the State GOP for an update on that campaign promise. Alabama GOP Chairman John Wahl said he has spoken personally with the president about the effort. “As a chairman of a state party who spends a lot of time on Interstate 65, I very much support widening the interstate,” Wahl said. “I know there have been conversations. I have talked with him about it, and hopefully we will see some movement there in the coming months.” Trump promised to make I-65 a six-lane road from Huntsville to Mobile. Right now, Wahl shared that the Trump Administration is focused on getting nominees approved and “fundamental larger issues.” However, he says to expect some movement in the future. When asked if the DOGE funding cuts will affect this I-65 project, Wahl said he did not believe so. “If DOGE is implemented properly, it actually helps with projects like widening Interstate 65,” Wahl said. “The federal government is bloated. It’s been bloated for years. There’s plenty of room to cut, and if we can cut it in areas where it needs to be cut and we can cut that wasteful spending, it actually leaves more money for projects that actually matter.” ALDOT is currently widening portions of I-65, like in Shelby County. Right now, construction is stretching from Exit 231 in Calera to Exit 234 at the Shelby County Airport. ___________________________________ OGFC Placement on I-65 From Sr-3 (Us-31) North of Calera to Buck Creek Type of Work : Resurfacing Project Length in Miles 0.000 County: Shelby As of July 1 , 2025, the project is in Final Planning status.
