At their meeting yesterday, Wake County commissioners approved construction contracts to update trails, waterfront access, playgrounds, educational spaces and more at Harris Lake and Blue Jay Point county parks. “These renovations are an exciting milestone in our continued commitment to preserving natural spaces while expanding recreational opportunities for everyone,” said Susan Evans, chair, Wake County Board of Commissioners. “We’re grateful to the voters for making these improvements possible and look forward to seeing residents enjoying them for years to come.” Harris Lake County Park Located in New Hill, the 680-acre Harris Lake County Park will undergo a series of upgrades guided by the 2017 Wake County Parks Facility Master Plan. Wake County awarded a $3.42 million construction contract to TCC Enterprises, Inc. of Louisburg. Planned improvements focus on three major areas of the park: Day use area: Addition of an accessible kayak launch, expanded parking and an accessible loading zone for non-motorized boats Disc golf and fishing pond area: New restroom facility, expanded parking lot, new picnic shelter, junior 9-hole disc golf course and a canoe storage structure with dock Park office area: A 950-square-foot expansion and renovation of the office building to create more space for staff and educational programs, as well as a new pole barn and maintenance yard improvements Public art: Installation of art features to enrich the park’s natural and cultural environment Learn more about the improvements on the project webpage. Blue Jay Point County Park Blue Jay Point County Park in north Raleigh will also benefit from bond-funded improvements outlined in the 2017 master plan. The Board awarded a $6.13 million construction contract to BAR Construction Company Inc. of Greensboro. Renovations will include: Habitat education pond area: Renovation of the pond and a new accessible walkway connecting it to the classroom for outdoor learning Trail and parking enhancements: ADA-compliant trail upgrades and expanded parking near the playground and GoApe Zipline Park Playground area: New shade structures, an expanded nature play zone with interactive features and a new picnic shelter Visitor center: Architectural updates and a 200-square-foot expansion to improve functionality Public art: Installation of art features to enrich the park’s natural and cultural environment More details can be found on the project webpage.
