Site work and paving for a civil project in Coral Harbour, Nunavut. Completed plans call for site work for a bridge / tunnel; for paving for a bridge / tunnel; road / highway; and road / highway.
Apex Bridge Approach - Paving of the road approaches on both sides of the newly replaced Apex Bridge Sinaa Street Culvert Crossing - Paving of the roadway over a recently installed culvert on Sinaa Street The Contractor shall provide all labor, materials, and equipment necessary to complete the following work at each site in accordance with applicable City of Iqaluit standards and the Ontario Provincial Standard Drawings (OPSD) method for overlapping asphalt joints when tying into and cutting existing asphalt surfaces. 1. Site Preparation: Final grading to ensure positive drainage of the final surface. Compact and proof-roll the base. Ensure proper tie-in to existing road surfaces or abutting structures. 2. Granular Base Placement: Supply, place, and compact granular base materials as needed: a) Granular "A" (crushed base) as the top layer beneath the asphalt. Granular materials must meet City of Iqaluit specifications for gradation and compaction (minimum 98% Standard Proctor density). The top layer of the existing Granular "A" (approximately 150mm) to be removed and replaced. 3. Asphalt Paving: Supply and place hot mix asphalt over prepared base. Asphalt mix design shall be suitable for arctic conditions (high stability and low temperature performance). Paving must be done with appropriate asphalt paving equipment (paver, rollers, etc.) to achieve a smooth, uniform surface without segregation. All joints with existing asphalt surfaces must be overlapped following Standard Industry Best Practices for overlapping asphalt joints to ensure proper integration and durability. The Contractor shall provide an asphalt mix design stamped by a NAPEG qualified pavement Engineer at least two (2) weeks prior to installation for City review and approval. 4. Compaction and Finishing: Compact the asphalt to achieve =95% of Marshall density. Ensure smooth transitions to existing pavement or gravel at the limits of work. The finished pavement shall have proper crown/cross-slope for drainage and no significant surface irregularities to ensure positive drainage. 5. Traffic Control & Protection: Implement traffic control measures during work, as needed, to ensure safety (temporary signage, flag persons, etc.). Both sites are currently open to traffic, so coordination will be required to manage any necessary lane closures while paving. 6. Cleanup: Upon completion, clean the site of debris, and ensure all adjacent areas (shoulders, ditches) disturbed by the work are restored. 7. Quality Control: Contractor is to provide all quality control (QC) processes including but not limited to: a) Granular Material LAB testing and reports two (2) weeks prior to scheduled installation. b) Granular layer compaction testing and reports prior to any asphalt placement. c) Asphalt testing and Core samples and associated reports within two weeks of Substantial Completion. 8. Provisional Item: Granular "B" (coarse sub-base), for any required fill or leveling course. Granular materials must meet City of Iqaluit specifications for gradation and compaction (minimum 98% Standard Proctor density).
